It’s Coyote Season in Detroit!!

Don’t be surprised if you start to see and hear these critters in the next few months.

coyote

You are more likely to see them during their breeding season which is typically from mid-January through March. While they are active both day and night, they tend to come out more at sunrise and sunset.

Don’t be afraid, coyotes are generally timid, steer clear of danger and do not pose a threat to humans. They can weigh anywhere between 25lbs-55lbs. They have been known however to prey on small unattended dogs and cats. So, don’t leave those little guys out unattended during this higher activity season. They are also opportunistic and will eat almost anything that is available. The best way to decrease your chances interacting with a coyote include:

  • Never approach or touch a coyote
  • Never intentionally feed a coyote
  • Eliminate all outside food sources, especially pet foods
  • Put garbage out the morning of pick-up day
  • Clear out wood and brush piles; they are good habitats for mice and rats which may attract coyotes
  • Accompany your pets outside, especially at dawn and dusk
  • Never leave your pets, especially small dogs, unattended outside
